College Communication Guidelines.
Reaching out to college coaches is a key part of the recruiting process — and how you communicate matters. This section breaks down how to email, what to say, and how to follow up with intention. From crafting your initial message to staying organized with responses, we’ll guide you step by step to help you build genuine, respectful relationships with coaches. Remember: communication is about more than just exposure — it’s about showing who you are, what you’re about, and why you might be a fit for their program.
Initiating Contact:
Emails: Start by emailing coaches, making your email specific to the school and program, and expressing your interest.
Phone Calls: While NCAA rules restrict when coaches can call, you can still call and leave a voicemail, followed up with an email.
Texts: Texting can be a great way to stay in touch, especially with coaches in smaller schools or those who prefer digital communication.
Preparing for Communication:
Research: Thoroughly research the coaches, their history, and their coaching style, as well as the school and the program.
Student-Athlete Profile: Prepare a one-page profile highlighting your academic and athletic achievements.
Highlight Reel: Create a highlight reel showcasing your skills.
During Communication:
Clear and Concise: Be clear, concise, and polite in all your communication.
Be Yourself: Be genuine and authentic in your interactions.
Ask Questions: Prepare thoughtful questions to ask the coach.
Active Listening: Actively listen to the coach and engage in the conversation.
Staying in Touch:
Follow-up: Follow up with coaches regularly, sharing updates and keeping the lines of communication open.
Be Transparent: If you're not interested in a particular program, be transparent with the coach.
Manage Expectations: If you're getting too many calls, politely ask coaches to cooperate with your schedule.
