Student-Athlete Transfer Checklist

1. Eligibility & Compliance

  • Understand NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA transfer rules (depends on your division and association)

  • Enter the transfer portal (for NCAA athletes)

  • Meet with compliance officer at your current school

  • Request and receive permission to contact other schools (if required)

  • Check academic eligibility (GPA, credits, progress-toward-degree)

  • Review potential transfer penalties (e.g. sit-out periods, eligibility loss)

2. Communicating with Coaches

  • Notify current coach of intent to transfer (be professional and respectful)

  • Reach out to potential new coaches/programs

  • Schedule calls or visits with new coaching staff

  • Request written scholarship/roster offer from new program

  • Get clarity on your expected role on the new team

3. Academics

  • Meet with academic advisor at your current school

  • Request official transcripts

  • Research academic programs at new schools

  • Verify transfer of credits with new school

  • Apply for admission at the new university

  • Check admissions deadlines and testing requirements (e.g. SAT/ACT if needed)

4. Financial Aid & Scholarships

  • Review your current scholarship contract

  • Ask new coach about athletic scholarship offer (partial/full, duration, renewal)

  • Submit FAFSA for financial aid

  • Check deadlines for institutional scholarships

  • Inquire about other aid (grants, work-study, etc.)

5. Recruiting & Visits

  • Schedule official/unofficial visits to potential schools

  • Ask questions about team culture, facilities, and support services

  • Meet with academic support staff for student-athletes

  • Tour campus housing, training facilities, and classrooms
